PORTUGAL

We are a group of 3 schools, from grammar to secondary level school. We have the traditional courses, for students who want to pursuit studies in College, and we also have training courses for students who want to start working right after they finish the mandatory number of years they have to attend school.

Our students come from a diverse multicultural background – we have students from families’ originary from Africa and from other part of the world.
We are an interesting melting pot of culture.
Our offer for students classes of arts, humanistic, scientific areas and the vocational training courses of social cultural animation, tourism, services, multimedia.

With the changing in Education over the last decade, we had to learn and to motivate students to leave and accept a multicultural reality – along the years we have received students from Africa, eastern countries and others. These students present different backgrounds such as cultural, social and religious one. Their process of integrating a new society has to be held cautiously promoting the students success without re characterizing them from their origins. Integrate without disregarding one’s belief and traditions.

Non formal curricula plays an utmost important role in integrating formal studies transforming them into something more appealing, more pragmatique, more « learneable ».
The new professional courses we provide for our students tend to melt both levels but not always successfully.

What are the skills and expertise of key staff/persons? . We are teachers, with training in organizing inclusive activities and promoting equal opportunities.
We have a fair number of teacher’s accreditated for training outside school, in external context and a good scientific background.

Teachers have always been sensitive to gender issues and we have tried to overcome what obstacles there might be concerning female discrimination due to social misconceptions or prejudices.

We often try to do our best. Each year new students appear with new flaws and needs – the social and economic crise has left a sense of disbelieve in what we may achive and paradoxally, Europe is not a close reality.

Formal education, although has a high importance in academic life and learnings are no longer the solo element in what we may learn and all the necessary skills we may develop.
We need to learn in good practices to combine the best of both world and use it to promote success.
